Area CDCR prisons' inmate, worker COVID-19 data update: First 'COVID-related' ISP inmate death reported, fifth CVSP

On Oct. 22, the California Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation (CDCR) reported an Aug. 22 COVID-related death of an incarcerated person assigned to Ironwood State Prison (ISP) at an outside hospital; on Oct. 23, CDCR reported an Oct. 22 COVID-related death of an incarcerated person assigned to Chuckawalla Valley State Prison (CVSP) at an outside hospital.

As of 5:49 a.m. Oct. 25, there have been a total of 15,375 confirmed COVID-19 cases of incarcerated persons in the California Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation (CDCR) system – 283 of which are active cases among in custody inmates; 14,562 of which have been resolved; 454 reported as “released while active;” and 76 deaths.

On Oct. 23, CDCR reported an Oct. 22 COVID-related death of an incarcerated person assigned to Chuckawalla Valley State Prison (CVSP) at an outside hospital.

“An incarcerated person from Chuckawalla Valley State Prison died on Oct. 22 at an outside hospital. This is the fifth incarcerated person assigned to CVSP to be identified as a COVID-related death,” stated CDCR, noting no additional information about the case will be provided in order to protect individual medical privacy.

The death is the fifth reported of an incarcerated person assigned to CVSP to be identified as COVID-related, with the fourth reported earlier this month on Oct. 4.

CVSP’s data, as of Oct. 25, has 11 active positive COVID-19 cases among in custody inmates – 7 of which are reported as new over the last 14 days, with a 1,404 cumulative total, 1,365 resolved, 23 released while active, and now five deaths.

CVSP’s Oct. 25 inmate case count of 11 is a significant drop from Sept. 19, when the figure was reported by CDCR’s public database at 148.

The Sept. 19 inmate case count was a notable spike from Sept. 8, when CVSP had zero cases reported.

Previously, by July 30, CVSP had flatlined the positive COVID-19 case number following concerning mid-June data – which showed 991 confirmed positives, making up 40.3% of CDCR’s total active in-custody cases among incarcerated persons reported at the time (June 13).

CVSP’s high was 996, reported on June 10.

On Oct. 22, CDCR reported an Aug. 22 COVID-related death of an incarcerated person assigned to Ironwood State Prison (ISP) at an outside hospital.

“An incarcerated person from Ironwood State Prison died on Aug. 22 at an outside hospital. This is the first incarcerated person assigned to ISP to be identified as a COVID-related death,” stated CDCR, noting no additional information about the case will be provided in order to protect individual medical privacy.

The Oct. 25 CDCR incarcerated persons population data also reports 12 positive COVID-19 active cases among in custody inmates at ISP, 2 of which are new over the last 14 days, for a cumulative total of 111.

The Oct. 25 number is a decrease from the Oct. 11 data, which at the time reported 27.

ISP’s incarcerated persons data further reports 93 to have been resolved, 5 released while active, and the one death.

“Active case count by date may be delayed 2-3 days while awaiting test results,” notes CDCR.

There have been 10 COVID-19 related CDCR staff deaths, to include one from ISP on June 3.

As of Oct. 23, there are a reported 627 active CDCR/California Correctional Health Care Services (CCHCS) COVID-19 employee cases statewide – 4,242 cumulative, and 3,615 of whom have returned to work.

ISP’s total cumulative confirmed COVID-19 positives among staff as of Oct. 23 is reported at 138, with 126 noted to have returned to work.

CVSP’s Oct. 23 total cumulative confirmed COVID-19 positives among staff is reported at 116, with 94 noted to have returned to work.
