The Blythe station Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents have had a busy month, with the latest incident on Nov. 12 seeing two U.S. citizens arrested at the Highway 78 immigration checkpoint.

“Yuma Sector Border Patrol Agents assigned to the Blythe Station arrested two U.S. citizens after they attempted to smuggle three illegal aliens through the Highway 78 immigration checkpoint Thursday night,” stated U.S. Customs & Border Protection on Nov. 13. “Agents referred a Mazda hatchback to the checkpoint’s secondary inspection area after a canine alerted to the vehicle at approximately 5 p.m. In secondary, agents instructed the vehicle occupants to exit the vehicle and discovered two illegal aliens sitting in the back seat and one hiding in the rear cargo area. Agents arrested the driver and front passenger for alien smuggling and seized the vehicle. The three Mexican Nationals were arrested for illegal entry and returned to Mexico.”

Three days earlier, on Nov. 9, Blythe station’s assigned Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents intercepted 53-lbs. of methamphetamine (estimated worth of more than $132,000) on Highway 95 – the agents’ second tire-meth bust of the month.

“Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the Blythe Station intercepted yet another spare tire methamphetamine smuggling attempt through the Highway 95 immigration checkpoint on Monday, their second within a week,” said U.S. Customs & Border Protection. “Agents referred a rented Jeep Grand Cherokee to the checkpoint’s secondary inspection area for further inspection at approximately 3:30 p.m. A canine alerted to the vehicle and a subsequent search revealed 50 packages of methamphetamine concealed in a spare tire in the rear cargo area.”

The driver, a U.S. citizen, was arrested; the narcotics and the vehicle were seized.

As noted, six days earlier on Nov. 3, Blythe station’s assigned Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents intercepted 41-lbs. of methamphetamine (estimated worth of more than $100,000) on Highway 95 – again, hidden in a spare tire.

“Yuma Sector Border Patrol Agents assigned to the Blythe Station arrested two U.S. citizens after finding 41 pounds of methamphetamine hidden in a spare tire in their vehicle at the Highway 95 immigration checkpoint Tuesday night. Agents referred a Nissan Versa to the checkpoint’s secondary inspection area following a canine alert at approximately 11:30 p.m. While in secondary, a search of the vehicle revealed a spare tire in the trunk that was unusually heavy. Agents inspected the tire and discovered 40 cellophane-wrapped packages that contained methamphetamine inside,” stated U.S. Customs & Border Protection. “Agents arrested the vehicle occupants, a male and female, and seized the narcotics and vehicle.”
