Fatal single-vehicle collision on 32nd Ave.: 59-year-old driver killed south of Blythe

Salvador J. Ortega, 59, of Mexicali, Mexico, per the Riverside County Coroner’s Bureau, was killed in a single-vehicle traffic collision near the intersection of Rannells Blvd. and 32nd Avenue, just south of Blythe, on Nov. 20.

According to the responding Blythe station California Highway Patrol (CHP), the fatal incident’s time of occurrence has not yet been determined.

“(Ortega), a 59-year-old male, was driving a 2002 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, eastbound on 32nd Ave., east of Rannells Blvd., at an unknown speed. For unknown reasons, (Ortega) allowed (the truck) to drift towards the left onto the north dirt shoulder of 32nd Ave.,” stated CHP. “(Ortega) allowed (the truck) to make an unsafe turn to the right. (The truck) proceeded across 32nd Ave. and onto the south dirt shoulder eventually traversing down an embankment while colliding with brush and overturning into a drainage ditch on the south side of 32nd Ave.”

According to the CHP report of collision, Ortega was wearing his seat belt but sustained fatal injuries.

“This traffic collision is still under investigation with details and cause pending,” stated CHP.
