PVC-EOPS to host free 'Coco' outreach event Oct. 29: Meet-and-greet with author Malín Alegria; plus movie, live mariachi

“The purpose of the outreach event is for the community to come out and enjoy themselves but at the same time see the different programs that PVC offers. Our Spring Schedule will also be provided to the community on that day, and they will also be able to create an account for registration,” stated EOPS/Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education (CARE) Director Maria “Machi” Rivera of the upcoming Oct. 29 outreach event.

Palo Verde Valley locals and area visitors have an event-packed month of October 2021, as an additional free community showcase will be provided by the Palo Verde College (PVC) Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) team.

On Oct. 29, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the campus courtyard and arts center (One College Dr.), PVC-EOPS will host a no-cost community outreach event with free food, a live mariachi performance, trunk-or-treat for kids, a “Coco” movie showing, and a meet-and-greet with renowned “the Big Golden Book of Coco” author Malín Alegria.

“The purpose of the outreach event is for the community to come out and enjoy themselves but at the same time see the different programs that PVC offers. Our Spring Schedule will also be provided to the community on that day, and they will also be able to create an account for registration,” stated EOPS/Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education (CARE) Director Maria “Machi” Rivera.

The live mariachi band will come in from El Centro, Calif., to entertain and liven up the evening event for attendees.

“We will (also) have lots of cool safety tools for the kids so that they can be extra careful when they go out trick or treating,” noted Rivera.

Alegria – a University of California (Santa Barbara) alumni with an MA in education – has also previously published “Estrella’s Quinceñera” (Simon & Schuster), “Sofi Mendoza’s Guide to Getting Lost in Mexico,” and the popular four-book “Border Town” series.

Additionally, Alegria’s short stories have been published in anthologies “15 Candles: 15 Tales of Taffeta, Hairspray, Drunk Uncles, and other Quinceañera Stories” and “Once Upon a Cuento.”

Alegria was also selected as one of in Latinostories.com’s 2009 BEST New Authors to Watch, and featured on NPR’s “2 Languages, Many Voices, Latinos in the U.S.” special series.

The Oct. 29 evening event’s provided schedule is:
