The Palo Verde College (PVC) Pirates’ Chest food program’s Oct. 16 disbursement served a total of 96 enrolled students’ households, totaling 309 persons, with free groceries amid the ongoing COVID-19 climate.

The next PVC Pirates’ Chest disbursement date – to be provided at the Blythe Emergency Food Pantry (181 S. Main St.) – is currently scheduled for Friday, Nov. 20.

“Thank you to all the volunteers (staff, faculty [teaching/non-teaching], management, student workers) who helped unload, stock, fill orders, organize, and clean-up during the distribution. Your help made set-up, organizing, and the distribution a smooth operation. You also made a difference in our students’ and community members lives,” stated PVC Director of Student Success & Equity Jaclyn Randall. “A special thank you to Blythe Emergency Food Pantry (BEFP). The organization continues to permit us to use their facility to address our students’ food insecurity needs. This wonderful partnership means our students do not go hungry and the BEFP patrons receive food staples we are not able to give to our students.”

The PVC Pirates’ Chest – a program resulting from efforts which began in 2018 following concerning survey results of students struggling to make ends meet – is made up of campus volunteers and leadership who share a vision of providing those enrolled the best opportunity for success by addressing, and ultimately ending, food insecurity.

The collective student success endeavor is helmed by the PVC Food Insecurity Advisory Committee. Partners include the Blythe Emergency Food Pantry; PVC CalFresh; FIND (Food In Need of Distribution) Food Bank; Mechanics Bank; the PVC Foundation; PVC employees; and NextEra Energy Inc.

“To learn more about the Pirates’ Chest, the Thanksgiving Meal plans, and the Christmas Meal distribution plans, the advisory committee meets the 4th Wednesday of the month (Oct. 28, 2020) via Zoom or visit the Pirates’ Chest webpage,” noted Randall.
