As of 5:50 p.m. Nov. 15, there have been a total of 17,490 confirmed COVID-19 cases of incarcerated persons in the California Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation (CDCR) system – 1,533 of which are active cases among in custody inmates; 1,464 new over the last 14 days; 15,411 of which have been resolved; 464 reported as “released while active;” and 82 deaths.
On Nov. 13, CDCR reported the Nov. 4 COVID-related death of an incarcerated person assigned to Chuckawalla Valley State Prison (CVSP) – the seventh from the area institution.
“One incarcerated person death was reported at Chuckawalla Valley State Prison on Nov. 4, this is the 82nd inmate death statewide. Next of kin notifications was made and no further information is being provided to protect individual medical privacy,” stated CDCR’s COVID update.
On Oct. 29, CDCR reported the Oct. 28 death of an incarcerated person assigned to CVSP “from what appear to be complications related to COVID-19” at an outside hospital.
The sixth death of an incarcerated person assigned to CVSP was preceded by the fifth reported on Oct. 22 and the fourth on Oct. 4.
CVSP’s data, as of Nov. 15, has 232 active positive COVID-19 cases among in custody inmates – 223 of which are reported as new over the last 14 days, with a 1,770 cumulative total, 1,504 resolved, 27 released while active, and now seven deaths.
The 232 CVSP inmate case count is a spike from Nov. 1’s then-reported 150, and Oct. 25’s then-reported 11.
CVSP latest figure is part of the institution’s third spike in COVID numbers – with June 13 then-reporting 991 confirmed positives (making up 40.3% of CDCR’s total active in-custody cases among incarcerated persons reported at the time) before leveling off to one case by Aug. 1; spiking again in September (topping off at 292 on Sept. 23) before leveling off to 5 on Oct. 19; and climbing again now to 232 as reported by CDCR’s public database on Nov. 15.
CVSP’s high was 996, reported for June 10.
On Oct. 22, CDCR reported an Aug. 22 COVID-related death of an incarcerated person assigned to Ironwood State Prison (ISP) at an outside hospital.
“An incarcerated person from Ironwood State Prison died on Aug. 22 at an outside hospital. This is the first incarcerated person assigned to ISP to be identified as a COVID-related death,” stated CDCR, noting no additional information about the case to be provided in order to protect individual medical privacy.
The Nov. 15 CDCR incarcerated persons population data reports 4 positive COVID-19 active cases among in custody inmates at ISP, 4 of which are new over the last 14 days, for a cumulative total of 115.
The Nov. 15 incarcerated persons’ data for ISP is a continued decrease from Nov. 1, which at the time reported 10 cases; Oct. 25, which reported 12; and Oct. 11, which reported 27.
ISP’s incarcerated persons data reports 105 to have been resolved, 5 released while active, and the one death.
“Active case count by date may be delayed 2-3 days while awaiting test results,” notes CDCR.
There have been 10 COVID-19 related CDCR staff deaths, to include one from ISP on June 3.
As of Nov. 13, there are a reported 707 active CDCR/California Correctional Health Care Services (CCHCS) COVID-19 employee cases statewide – 579 of which are new over the last 14 days, with a 4,915 confirmed cumulative total, and 4,208 of whom have returned to work.
ISP’s total cumulative confirmed COVID-19 positives among staff as of Nov. 13 is reported at 146, with 132 noted to have returned to work, and 14 active cases – 5 of which are new over the last 14 days.
